Ultrasound Requirements: If you are coming from out of town for a medical abortion, it may be necessary to get an ultrasound.

The abortion pill works best when the gestational sac is visible. If you’re coming from far, you might want to get an ultrasound to confirm how far along you are. 

We completely understand that this process hasn’t been this complex in 50 years. However, before you travel to our Santa Teresa, New Mexico clinic, make sure the sac is visible.

If you are too early and we can’t see the gestational sac, we cannot give you the pill because it will not work nor stop it from growing. And, if you are past the 11-week mark, surgical intervention would be required because the medical abortion pills only succeed at 11 weeks and under.

There is such a thing as taking the abortion pill too early and too late. To ensure you don’t travel to us just to be sent home empty-handed, get an ultrasound. 

Will I get an ultrasound done at the clinic?

Yes! Our medical abortions include the ultrasound, counseling session, and all the medications you’ll need. That includes pain management medication and antibiotics.

When is an ultrasound not needed?

• An ultrasound is NOT necessary if you are 6-7 or more weeks.
• If you are coming from El Paso, Texas or surrounding areas.
